Most subscription widgets bribe you with 20% off.
The idea: A visible gift for each of the first 3 subscription orders raises subscription take rate and month-3 retention compared with a flat 20% discount.
Only the outlined part is new. Everything grey is the same as A.
What’s different
Gifts shown as a timeline, not a promise in small print
Order 1, 2 and 3 are each a visible step. A next reward in sight is the goal-gradient effect, aimed at the month-3 retention cliff.
One-time dims the ladder and names the loss
“You’d miss 3 free gifts worth $52”: honest, specific loss framing with no health fear.
The fine print is generous on purpose
“Gifts already shipped are yours to keep” removes the trap feeling that stops people subscribing.
Built through the new-mechanic path
Subscription had no gift-ladder version, so Version F was built once. Any design can now use it.
Gift ladder vs flat 20% discount. Measure subscription take rate and the share of subscribers who reach order 3.
Goal gradient · Reciprocity · Loss aversion · Anchoring
